Chapter 16

Henry and I talked well into the night, nibbling on whatever meat and vegetables he’d been able to scrounge in between fighting Rorik. The conversation was easy; it was as if we were just picking up from the last time we’d hung out. Completely different from when I’d been around the imposter. When I fell asleep that night, and while Henry took his turn watching for more of Rorik’s followers, I rested easy.

In the morning, when I woke up, Henry was already up. Morning light peeked through the cracks in the shut-up windows.

“Morning, sleepyhead.” Henry grinned impishly at me as he brought over a bowl of something that smelled good. I looked inside to find some broken up, mushy bread concoction.

“It’s Etelaranikä bread. Rabbit meat and vegetables cooked inside of a loaf. This loaf was kinda dry and hard, so I added some water and tried to make it more edible.” He grabbed a spoon from the fireplace’s hearth and I started eating. The mash wasn’t terrible, given the ingredients used to make it.

Once I finished, I gave him back the spoon and bowl and asked, “What did you have planned for today?” I knew I needed to find Haldrek, but I wondered if helping Henry wouldn’t make things easier overall.

“The same thing I do every day; piss off the necro.” Henry grinned, turning his attention away from the window. “I’ve been going after any fighters or mages I see coming out of the cave. Syralgos taught me the death rites, so I’ve been sending them to Lyrroth, too. That way Rorik has fewer followers and he can’t reanimate any of them.”

I grimaced, wondering if he knew about the raids into Bragidrattür. “Rorik is still kidnapping people. Sending fighters and lesser necromancers there to snatch people from their homes.”

Henry grumbled. “I’ve been picking off everyone I’ve seen coming out of that damn cave, though.”

“Caves usually have more than one entrance.”

“Yeah, but I thought I got all the other ways in and out.”

Remind him not all entrances may be of this realm.

“Rhaegos says Rorik could have other entrances through other realms. Which, given that he has at least one realm he can drag people into and torture…”

Henry groaned. “Duh. I should have thought of that. All the more reason to get rid of him. Are you ready?” He glanced out the window one more time, then held his hand out to me.

I nodded. “I should introduce you to Haldrek and the others who are fighting with him. Aallotar and Gunner. Then we could pool all our knowledge.”

Henry nodded as we slipped out of the door and into the morning sunlight. “Haldrek is your husband, right? The guy whose lap you woke up in?” I gently jabbed Henry in the arm, and he chuckled. “That’ll be a heck of a story to tell your kids one day. Still can’t believe you and Mattie each have a kid. I guess things are different here.”

I nodded. “Finding myself in Lohikärra and becoming its High Queen certainly wasn’t something I expected in high school.
